Antioxidant and Nootrophic Assay of Natural Products:An Overvew

The book contains a piece of original research work which has been compiled in two chapters. Chapter one reports the evaluation of antioxidant activity of natural origin crocin (isolated from stigmas of Crocus sativus), kaempferol (isolated from corms and petals of Crocus sativus) and podophyllotoxin (isolated from rhizome of Podophyllum hexandrum) screened through in-vitro chemical, biochemical and electrochemical assays. Chapter two reports the in-vivo pharmacological evaluation of crocin and its modified form as nootropic agent (memory enhancing). Crocin (active constituent of Indian Ayurvedic herb Crocus sativus) and its modified form Cro-(cys)2 improved memory of rats. The research reported in the book will be very useful not only for researchers in the field but also common people can use these drugs as natural remedies for many diseases like Alzheimer patient for memory enhancement. These drugs can also be recommended as good natural antioxidants as they possess a tendency to donate electrons and could react with free radicals generated during metabolic reactions in the cells.
