ANIMAL TRACTION TRAINING MANUAL FOR FIELD EXTENSION WORKERS IN UGANDA

This handbook, though may not include all aspects of animal traction, it however describes the various training methods for extension workers and farmers on the use of oxen in various farming activities. It also brings out the importance of animal traction in farming and society (social aspects in farming communities). It covers various uses of animal traction in farming such as land preparation, planting, weeding, potato ridging, groundnut lifting, and transport. It also highlights suitable conditions for animal traction and factors affecting the adoption of animal traction technologies in farming. It emphasizes the need to train the animals so as to make them effective and efficient in carrying out the tasks. It covers the techniques in training the animals (oxen) and their drivers. Management and care of the work animals have been covered.
