An Investigation of Employee Psychological/ Counselling Needs

The study centered on employees¿ psychological needs that affect directly their motivation to work. The purpose of the study was to investigate the key counseling needs that reduce the motivation of employees as linked to duty performance in formal organizations. A descriptive survey study was employed with a sample size of 100 employees being selected from various departments of Mumias Sugar Company. Simple random sampling method was used to select the subjects. The main research instrument was 67-item inventory questionnaire of employees¿ psychological needs and problem situations designed by the researcher. The dependent variable was a score on the 5-point Likert Scale that was contained in the questionnaires. The data was analysed by descriptive statistics including percentages, frequencies, t-tests and ANOVA one-way. The grouped data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). It was found that there were counseling needs among employees in MSC influenced by gender, age, marital status and work experience.
