An Economic Analysis of Groundwater markets

Water scarcity is an acute problem for a monsoon dependent country and hence reliable irrigation is the vital ingredient in modern agriculture. Initially, surface and groundwater irrigation through traditional water extraction devices brought stability in the Indian agriculture, but they could not cope fully with the demand of the modern agriculture. Therefore, policymakers and farmers have started giving more emphasis to the development of groundwater irrigation through modern Water-Extraction Mechanisms (WEMs).The overall objective of this book was to know the structure, determinants and efficiency of groundwater markets, and to suggest suitable policy options for realization of maximum gains from the groundwater exploitation in Union Territory of Puducherry
