Although many adversaries may still wish to regard Judaism, at best, as a minority in need of protection, such an approach has lost its validity. Each individual may contemplate why languages like Sumerian, spoken for over three thousand years, have vanished, just as Latin and the ancient Egyptian languages and dialects have disappeared. Hebrew, however, despite being older than Chinese, has been preserved for thousands of years through the will of its bearers of literature, culture, liturgy, and religion. This book is the story of devotion. It is an epic of the passions of common people; the narrative of a people who have always existed, their process of state formation, and the emergence of the first nation. It encompasses personalities with virtues and flaws-that is, common human traits.
