Piezoelectric Bone Surgery is a process that utilizes piezoelectric vibrations in the application of cutting bone tissue. The process was patented by Fernando Bianchetti, Domenico Vercellotti, and Tomaso Vercellotti. It is indicated for use in periodontal, implant, oral, maxillofacial, cranial and spinal procedures. Daniel defined microsurgery in broad terms as surgery performed under magnification by the microscope. Serafin described microsurgery as a methodology ¿ modification and refinement of existing surgical techniques using magnification to improve visualization, with applications to all specialties. Apotheker and Jako first introduced commercial operating microscope to dentistry in 1981. Microsurgery was introduced to the field of periodontics in 1992. A continuing education course was subsequently conferred by Shanelec and Tibbetts on periodontal microsurgery at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology held in 1993.
