Acute inflammatory mediators in Periodontal disease

Inflammation is a safety response of the body that can become hazardous, leading to complex diseases if ignored at an early stage. The oral cavity is no exception, although there are various diseases related to the mouth, Periodontitis is said to be one of the most prevalent oral disease affecting majority of the worlds population. Periodontitis is not a sudden disease but a chronic one, which advances slowly and destroys the entire tooth-supporting apparatus including the bone and gums leading to tooth loss. This slow progressing disease can be halted if it is identified and treated at an earlier stage.Over the years, many literature evidence and studies have concentrated in detail only about chronic inflammatory cells, thus, the role of acute inflammatory cell that prevent or trigger periodontitis has been forgotten.
