A Trans-Epochal Approach in Historical Security Studies

This volume takes stock of current research findings and future prospects in Historical Security Studies. It examines how security has been demanded, provided, challenged, and defended from the Middle Ages to the present. Drawing on a constructivist understanding of security, it explores how social science approaches yield new historical findings and how historical evidence can further advance social science research on security. From a trans-epochal perspective, the contributions demonstrate that security was not limited to issues of war, the state, or political order, but also encompassed religion, social belonging, political participation, economic stability, and everyday practices.
