The essence of diaspora is not felt very simply by Jhumpa Lahiri herself, considering the pressures of acculturation. The presence of this pressure is obvious in her fictional characters as well. Memory is the only vital and constant agent in diaspora, which affects the thought processes of the immigrants. Generation gap plays a major role in this attitude towards memory, as different generations react and fall back on the past events differently. The two novels and two story collections are read and interpreted to bring out the symbolic essence of diaspora and globalization, apparently blurred like palimpsest.
