A Monograph on Sonneratia apetala Buch.- Ham

The aim of this book is to review and compile the information on Sonneratia apetala which is a pioneer species in the Sundarbans mangrove forest. It plays important ecological role by creating suitable environmental conditions for next stage seral communities. Despite of its role in the Sundarbans, it consists about 80 % of the total coastal afforestation in Bangladesh. About 35 square kilometers land accreted every year in the coastal areas in Bangladesh. If the coastal afforestation programme continues in order to protect the coastal people against natural calamities, S. apetala will remain as an important mangrove species in that plantation programme. So, presented knowledge will be helpful for the planners, policy makers, naturalists and biologists in the face of predicted climate change consequences.
