The Need for Disaster Risk Reduction in Secondary School Curriculum

Over a period of time society experience changes. As these aspects change, there is bound to be change in the society¿s educational system so as to be able to cope with changes in other areas such as political, social and economic aspects of the society. Prevention begins with information. Awareness is the first step toward action. Awareness can trigger interest, interest can lead to attention, and attention can prompt action. Therefore, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) should begin at school by mobilizing global efforts to use knowledge; innovation and education to build a culture of safety at all levels. An indicator of achievement would be the inclusion of DRR knowledge in relevant sections of school curricula at all levels.
