The importance of using PPE in the waste collection service

The safety of professionals in the collection of Urban Solid Waste (MSW), regarding the use of Individual Protection Equipment (IPE's) deserves special attention, not only because of the dynamics of the activities developed, but also because of the social, environmental and economic importance of providing this service. The Case Study conducted in the city of Augusto Corrêa, in the state of Pará, highlighted critical points to be evaluated by the Municipal Management, since a relevant number of MSW collection professionals do not use all the PPE's necessary to prevent the risks inherent to their profession. The measures to prevent and control the risks found can minimize the existing problem. The proper use of PPE's compatible with the risks related to labor activity is the main action to be adopted by the Municipality. Control measures to eliminate, reduce or mitigate the risk must analyze the seriousness of this risk, time of exposure to the agent and the real need for this exposure. The research suggests investment in the infrastructure of the waste sector in order to provide the employee with comfort and safety conditions.
