THE CHALLENGES OF A SUSTAINABLE GLOBAL COCOA ECONOMY

More than five million small cocoa farmers with an average of 3 ha live in extreme poverty on $1.02 per day, almost twice the poverty line, even though they provide 90% of the world's cocoa supply.In a cocoa economy worth over $100 billion, weakened by unsustainable practices.Certification was introduced in the cocoa sector in Cote d'Ivoire by Edmond Konan in 2004 following the problem of child labour in the sector.Supposed to open up new opportunities for producers, it is threatened by functional and structural limitations and has not been able to meet the expectations of producers, i.e. to access decent incomes, to live with dignity and to inspire hope in future generations.Faced with this mirage, Edmond Konan proposes in this book an assessment of the implementation of the process in Côte d'Ivoire and a new vision based on diversification for a sustainable world cocoa economy.
