Six Sigma: a structured and data driven methodology

An increasing number of executives are proving that a revolutionary concept called Six Sigma produces unparalleled results in meeting customer needs by achieving near perfection in the quality of products and services of all kinds. The Six Sigma process has become the new world standard for improving quality, reducing defects and cutting costs. A surprising bonus is that it also raises employee professionalism and job satisfaction to new heights for organizations of all types. As variation is the single greatest enemy of any industry. Most of the quality and management problems are due to the existence of variation. All defects and non-conformities would have vanished if variation would have eliminated. The present study was carried out at Birdi Cycle Industries, Ludhiana which was earlier facing the harsh realities of competitive environment because of its high rejection rate. It was done in two stages. In first stage, the tools and techniques required for achieving different Sigma Levels were implemented and desired Sigma Level was achieved. In second phase Six Sigma was successfully implemented by using DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve & Control) Methodology.
