Sheep in the Midst of Wolves

Jesus told His disciples "you are like sheep in the midst of wolves". This is a strong statement which did not make sense until He added "therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves". It is because Christians do not heed to this admonition that they get into all sorts of problems and exploitation by the devil and people around them. This world is pungent and the behaviour of many not yet transformed by the Word is acidic and hurtful. The characters used by Jesus - sheep, wolf, dove, and serpent are really telling about the realities in this world and what awaits the follower of Christ. Though the serpent is bad, Jesus recommended one thing from him - his wisdom. We need the wisdom of God but we also need the wisdom of the serpent.
