Revival of Regional integration in East Africa

The first wave of regional trade integration in East Africa occured during the post colonial era.The first East African Community was established in 1967 under the Treaty of East African Cooperation. This type of integration was aimed towards political, industrial and economic development. The integration was not attained due to various challenges. The second wave of regional integration is quite different from the previous one. It reflects a deeper level of integration. The East African Community was re-established in 1999 under the East African Community Treaty.It is aimed towards the harmonization of trade, economic policies and a more open approach to multilateral trade. The East African Community (EAC) was formed when all partner states were members of the World Trade Organization. With globalization taking centre stage,Regional Trade Arrangements need to be consistent with the World Trade Organization rules and disciplines.
