Oral sucrose analgesia for preterm neonates

Neonates exhibiting such behavior are therefore treated with sedation, which is ineffective for reducing the perception of pain.Many newborns particularly premature newborns undergo painful procedures (venipuncture/blood sampling ) quite frequently and therefore it is important to find an easy and reliable method to reduce pain.This randomized control trial was conducted to compare 25% sucrose analgesia with distilled water in normal preterm neonates undergoing painful procedure.Premature infant pain profile (PIPP)was used as assessment tool which is easy,reliable and can improve effectiveness of pain-relieving interventions in preterm babies.25% sucrose is a good, safe and low cost oral analgesic and can be used as routine pain relief agent in Neonatal-ICUs, during invasive and painful procedures.
