Nanocellulose Materials

This open access book offers one of the first comprehensive safety assessments of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), also called cellulose nanofibers—a key class of nanocellulose distinguished by their high strength, light weight, and potential to replace petroleum-derived materials. As interest in CNFs continues to grow in the context of carbon-neutral technologies, increasing attention is also being directed toward their potential health and environmental impacts, particularly those associated with their nanoscale dimensions and fibrous morphology.

Translated from a Japanese report originally published by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), this volume integrates findings from peer‑reviewed literature and two large national research projects commissioned by NEDO (2017–2019 and 2020–2024).
