Mass Transfer Studies Electrolytic Cells

Jet flow is one of the techniques adopted to augment the heat/mass transfer rates. It allows short flow-paths on the transfer surface, resulting in high rates of mass transfer. Industrially, jet flow finds wide applications such as annealing of metals and plastic sheets, tampering of glass, drying of textiles, veneer, paper and film materials. Very few works have been reported on mass transfer in submerged single jets, while the works on submerged multi-jets are meager. The present investigation is, therefore, undertaken with impinging submerged multi-jets in closed containers. Mass transfer rates were evaluated at concentric ring electrodes and a central electrode on the target surface, placed normal to the jet flow and also on a strip electrode located on the confining wall of the electrochemical cell, employing limiting current technique. The radial variations in the mass transfer coefficients on the target surface and comparison of average radial mass transfer coefficients with average wall mass transfer coefficients have been investigated. The pressure drop data were also obtained experimentally for the same system for conditions similar to those in mass transfer studies.
