Issues and Challenges in the Adoption of IFRS in Nigeria

Lack of credibility in financial reporting prompted regulators to find a way of addressing the issue of standard in financial reporting. The decision to adopt IFRS is however observed to have some weaknesses; hence implementation of policy results in a lot of challenges. Nigeria being a developing country is faced with challenges different from the developed world. It is therefore important to study the challenges relevant to Nigeria in order to move forward. Identifying this unique challenges will help to develop relevant solutions rather than adopting foreign based ones. This will contribute to resolving the problems of setting a global accounting standard. The mandatory adoption of IFRS in Nigeria makes this work necessary. It explores the challenges in the adoption of IFRS and the supporting activities of professional associations towards preparing accountants for implementation in Nigeria. This work will be of interest to organizations adopting IFRS, auditors, accountants, financial services firms, regulatory bodies, professional associations and other interested stakeholders.
