Das Werk des Bildhauers, Fotografen und Videokünstlers Kay Walkowiak (geb. 1980 in Salzburg, lebt und arbeitet in Wien) vereint Strategien der Konzeptkunst und Post-Minimal-Art. In vielen seiner Arbeiten erforscht er die historische und soziokulturelle Handhabe von Formen und hinterfragt deren Funktion als Projektionsfläche für zeitlose Utopien. Dabei legt der Künstler unterschiedliche Form-, Raum- und Zeitkonzepte offen. In seinen aktuellen Arbeiten nimmt Walkowiak neben Utopien zunehmend auch gesellschaftliche Sehnsüchte nach Alternativen zu einer als unbefriedigend empfundenen politischen und ökologischen Gegenwart in den Blick. Fragen zu neuen Modellen von Gemeinschaft und Verbundenheit aller Lebensformen stehen im Zentrum dieser künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen. Interbeing gibt Einblicke in Walkowiaks Schaffen der letzten zwanzig Jahre. Mit Texten von Yuki Higashino und Stephen Zepke sowie einem Gespräch zwischen Kay Walkowiak und Stephanie Damianitsch.


Playful Displacements

The sculptor, photographer, and video artist Kay Walkowiak’s (b. Salzburg, 1980; lives and works in Vienna) oeuvre blends strategies of conceptual and post-minimal art. Many of his works explore the historical and sociocultural uses of forms and question their function as a projection screen for timeless utopias. In this way, the artist reveals diverse conceptions of form, space, and time.

In his most recent works, Walkowiak increasingly focuses not only on utopias but also on society’s yearning for alternatives to a political and ecological present perceived as dissatisfactory. Questions concerning new models of community and interconnection tying together all forms of life are at the heart of these artistic explorations.
