Information Visualisation to Support Decision-Making

Informed decisions are based on the availability of information and the ability of decision-makers to manipulate this information. More often than not, the decision-relevant information is subject to uncertainty arising from different sources. Consequently, decisions involve an element of risk. This book presents the design and evaluation of information visualisation tools to support informed decision-making (IDM) under uncertainty and risk. First, the main requirements and considerations that need to be taken into account when designing visualisation tools to support decision-making under uncertainty and risk have been identified and analysed. Second, based on these requirements, information visualisation tools for portraying information about the decision problem and raising the awareness of decision-makers about the uncertainty and risk associate with decision-making have been designed and implemented. Third, the usefulness of these tools has been evaluated through a qualitative user study. The results provide useful insights into the benefits of using information visualisation for decision support under uncertainty and risk.
