Industrial Pharmacy

The word ¿Pharmacy¿ is derived from the greek word PHARMAKON means ¿medicine or drug¿. It is defined as the art and science of preparing and dispensing medication, the provision of drug information, interpretation of prescription orders, the compounding, labeling, drug product selection and drug utilization reviews, patient monitoring and intervention. Whereas, industrial pharmacy is concerned with the research, manufacturing, quality assurance including marketing and distribution of these drug products. In simple words, it deals with the conversion of raw materials into certain dosage forms on a large scale. Ex.; Tablets, Capsules, Suppositories and Ampoules etc. The reasons for the large scale manufacturing in pharmaceutical industries are related to its accuracy and economic aspects. Because, the larger the quantities of materials involved, proportionally is the accuracy of measurements increased and the cost of production decreases.
