Hamlet and Oblomov: A Comparative Study

The employment of Marxist hermeneutics in this book "Hamlet and Oblomov: A Comparative Study" yielded the result that the superfluous heroes belong to the decadent land-owning and serf-owning aristocrat class, representing class confusion, irresolution and procrastination of the intelligentsia of their age. It can easily be inferred from this comparison that the superfluous disappointment and disenchantment of the superfluous heroes of world literature with the existing social formation and status quo of their era and their inability to find dimension and desire to change them may be termed as Hamletism or Oblomovism. In fact, Hamletism or Oblomovism is based upon the private property, which breeds and nourishes this type of negative and flawed characters that will completely disappear with the elimination of the social formations based upon private property in future social formation of Communism. For this reason,Vladimir Lenin used to identify the character of Oblomov with his political enemies, feudal lords, Mensheviks, and bourgeois intelligentsia of his time and denounce them in this way for possessing Oblomovism.
