The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain a better understanding of the factors that enabled the study participants to overcome domestic violence. The study took place in New York, USA. The findings showed that survivors of domestic violence tolerated their abusive situations longer because they did not have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and permanently leave their abusers.
