Epistemology in an African Context: Past and Present

One cannot speak about epistemology without mentioning ancient Greek philosophers, such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. From these great thinkers, epistemology sprung into other corners of the world. In Africa, it is only with the coming of colonialists and missionaries to Africa, that the notion of epistemology began to be discussed among Africans and non-Africans alike. However, it emerged that Africans were thought not to have epistemological concepts due to lack of written proofs. It is for this reason that that this book makes a comparison between the western notion of epistemology and the African notion of epistemology in order to show their similarities and differences. This book shows us the way on how to think more critically about African notion of epistemology.
