Epilepsy: A Neurodegenerative Disorder and Its Management

There are over 200,000 new cases of seizures and epilepsy each year. Because neuropsychologists are frequently called upon to evaluate patients with brain tumors, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and toxic exposure (all of which may cause epilepsy), most neuropsychologists will encounter patients with seizures at some point in their practice career. Moreover, psychologists may be among the first to recognize an undiagnosed seizure disorder that may require referral for further medical work-up and possible treatment. This book will help to understands the important aspects of epilepsy (namely, its causes, presentations, cognitive and emotional implications, treatments, and prognosis), and this book was written to serve this purpose. The aim of this volume is, therefore, to provide a reference resource for readers that covers the classification of epileptic disorders, medical diagnostic and treatment methods used in epilepsy, the cognitive and psychiatric effects of epilepsy and the involvement of different neurotransmitter.
