In 1918, German monarchism came to an end, and the republic was proclaimed. Shortly after, the Wittelsbachs, the Bavarian royal house, demanded that the Free State compensate them for their forfeited assets. Both sides negotiated this issue until 1923. The result was the establishment of the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund for the maintenance of the former royal family. This book sheds light on the beginnings of the fund, which still exists today.
