Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

This book outlines a comprehensive study on stress, PTSD, and the effectiveness of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), particularly in the aviation sector. It begins by defining key stress-related concepts and advocating for a thoughtful approach to managing stress, both personally and professionally, with CISM presented as a structured support method. The study employs a mixed-methods design, including qualitative case studies and quantitative analysis, to evaluate CISM’s implementation and effectiveness. A specially developed questionnaire (FACIQ) was used to assess perceptions of CISM across European airline personnel, revealing high acceptance and emphasizing the importance of peer support and confidentiality. The findings suggest that relationship-oriented factors often outweigh professional qualifications in motivating individuals to seek support, and the study concludes with practical recommendations for expanding CISM applications beyond aviation.
