Compassion fatigue among counselors

Working with and listening to the pain of survivors of violent crimes, genocide, political persecution, domestic violence, muggings, rape, defilement, wars, terrorism, hijacking, abuse and tortures may be overwhelming to the mental health workers. If no preventive measures are taken mental health practitioners may suffer from a form of stress called compassion fatigue, hence becoming the ¿wounded healers¿ leading to situation of transference and counter-transference. In fact Studies show that almost 50% of mental health practitioners working with victims of disasters are at risk of compassion fatigue.This book shows how this phenomenon impacts counselors' performance and provides effective mitigating factors to the problem.
