Bt COTTON CULTIVATION IN ANDHRA PRADESH

Biotechnology has emerged as one of the most-capital and knowledge intensive technologies of the present day and age. The advancement and utilization of this technology is sprouting at present which will soon expected to blossom and flourish in the field of agriculture. A number of countries, having been motivated by the possibilities of this technology are increasingly embarking agricultural biotechnology as a potential, technological solution in contributing enhanced agricultural productivity, food security, environmental sustainability and poverty reduction. Bt Cotton, which is bestowed with resistance to insects and pests, was first introduced in India. As the demand for Bt cotton has been increasing, it has invoked novel interest and exciting emotion among a large section of personalities like plant breeders, social scientists, environmentalists and on the likely impact of Bt cotton. Although, the empirical work is confined to AndhraPradesh in its analytical framework, methodology and discussion of relevant issues has much wider application. It is the major contribution to the research and would be useful to Economists, Agricultural Scientists and policy makers.
