Becoming HIV/TB co-infected patients

Introduction Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV infection are two major public health problems in sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of this study is to assess the fate of patients co-infected with HIV/TB. Material and methods: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study of 104 co-infected TB/HIV patients between August 1st, 2019 and February 29th, 2020 at SMIT in Donka. That is to say a duration of 7 months.Results: The 104 patients followed were mostly women (59.6%), married (66.3%) and with a mean age of 39.75 ± 12.44 years. In our study 80% of the patients had a CD4 count of less than 200 cells/mm3 and stage 4 was the most represented in our patients: 62.5% at the end of the study 45.2% were cured versus 29.8% died, 22.2% were lost to follow-up and 2.9% were abandoned; and the factors associated with death was age with a p-value of 0.033.Conclusion: TB/HIV remains a public health problem. Therefore, all TB patients should be tested for HIV and all PHAs should be tested for TB.
