Adolescent Substance Misuse In Search of Solutions

Issues and trends in relation to substance misuse often develop in the transitional phase of adolescence, as young people begin looking towards their peers for direction and are less subject to parental authority. In relation to substance misuse it is observed that risk and protection factors exist in equal measure within different contexts, including within the individual, family, peer group, school and community settings. Working closely with families, carers and community/voluntary organizations as well as with other statutory agencies improves communication and mobilizes resources in ways that enhances protection for young people, especially in circumstances where there are a number of family members engaging in substance misuse. This book documents research carried out across five communities in west Dublin suburbs, exploring professionals understanding of risk factors for substances misuse by young people and approaches to intervention.
