The XH-40 prototype \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eflew in 1956, production commenced in 1959,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand by 1962 the Huey entered combat \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eservice with the 57th Medical Detachment\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ein S.E. Asia.  The UH-1¿s history in combat\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eincludes a long and meritorious service in \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVietnam, where its distinctive airframe\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand two-blade teetering rotor came to \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esymbolize the concept of air mobility.  \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHueys of various configuration flew in a \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewide variety of roles, and were modified as\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecargo carriers, search and rescue platforms, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003egunships and for reconnaissance and \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eelectronic warfare missions.  Of over \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e7000 UH-1s to serve in Vietnam, an \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eastonishing 3305 were destroyed including \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esome of the last American aircraft lost in\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe war ¿ the Hueys used to evacuate the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eU.S.Embassy in Saigon at war¿s end.  \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn addition to Army service, UH-1s flew for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy as well as \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efor air forces around the world.
