Furthermore, it is a precipitous process ¿ almost daily are\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eshifts of emphasis and new issues which dominate the higher education debate.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the second chapter this paper will give an insight in the South Africäs system of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehigher education during apartheid with a special focus on the role that the state\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eplayed , as this makes clear the reason for any transformation.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen discussing the transformation of South Africäs higher education system, the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efirst item of business involves changing the racial complexion of university student\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand staff profiles. Therefore it is necessary to discuss access policies for students\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand affirmative action programmes concerning staff policies.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the fourth chapter future perspectives, such as distance learning programmes, and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003echallenges will be considered that universities in South Africa are facing nowadays.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe centre of attention are the miscellaneous influences on the higher education\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esystem.
