Down to the year 1600 we find the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ename spelt in a variety of ways¿Derwent, Darwen, Darwynne, etc. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is possible, therefore, that the family migrated at some unknown \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edate from Yorkshire, Cumberland, or Derbyshire, where Derwent \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eoccurs as the name of a river. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe first ancestor of whom we know was one William Darwin, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewho lived, about the year 1500, at Marton, near Gainsborough.
