Waseda University was selected to be a part of this\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eproject.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Global Asia Research Center (GARC) is one of the centers responsible\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efor world-class education and research at Waseda University, under the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eframework of the TGU2. The purpose of the GARC is to study historical\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ereconciliation and sustainable development from an interdisciplinary\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eperspective, and to disseminate the outcomes globally. The Sustainable\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDevelopment Goals (SDGs), adopted at the United Nations Sustainable\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDevelopment Summit in September 2015, are global development goals. One\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof the objectives of the TGU is to achieve the SDGs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eReconciling history and promoting sustainable future development in East\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAsia present significant challenges. In pursuing reconciliation in East Asia, a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecritical re-examination of Japan's war responsibility and colonialism is\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enecessary. In Europe, war and colonial responsibilities have been discussed\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eseparately. While advances have been made on the question of war\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresponsibility, the debate over the legacy of colonialism has only recently\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebegun. Promoting sustainable development and reaching a regional agreement\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eon a common goal appears to be more challenging for the nations of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEast Asia, where there are greater differences in religion, culture, economic\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edevelopment, political systems, and other aspects when compared to Europe.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStudies to overcome these challenges should be conducted from an\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einterdisciplinary perspective, incorporating multiple disciplines. The GARC\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebrings together researchers from various specialized fields such as history,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edevelopment studies, economics, sociology, international relations, international\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elaw, regional studies, peace studies, conflict resolution, political science,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eurban and rural planning, business administration, and management\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eengineering.
