This thesis has three objectives. First, it attempts to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003equalitatively describe the ASEAN cooperation in order to promote interest in ASEAN.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSecond, it quantitatively estimates the effect of international trade on economic development\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof the ASEAN nations. Finally, it investigates how the effect of international trade on\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eeconomic growth varies as a result of differences in human capital, financial resources and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einstitution across the ASEAN nations.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo accomplish these tasks, panel dataset on the ASEAN nations from 1980 to 2010\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eare collected and pooled OLS, fixed-effect and instrumental variable models are applied to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe dataset. Taking into account a variety of specification issues as well as endogeneity of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etrade openness, the research results show that trade openness plays an extremely important\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003erole on economic development of these countries. In addition, the benefit from trade\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eopenness is greater in countries that have more educated workers, deeper financial resources\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand better quality of institution.
