Here\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe SOS performance of counteracting oil disasters at open sea is closely examined.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs a result of the evaluation of the functional principle of the system, it is\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efound that the SOS shows a higher e¿ciency compared to existing oil recovery\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esystems - especially in high seas.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe SOS does not feature any moving parts. The system consists of a moon\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epool (oil dike) and a pontoon (bow segment), which glides on the heavily moving,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eoil polluted water surface, damping the waves. As a result of this arrangement,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe oil layer to ¿ows underneath the pontoon towards a transverse blade, which\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eseparates the oil from the water and protects the moon pool from wave e¿ects.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt the trailing edge of the bow segment a vortex develops, accelerating the oil\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eparticles in addition to their positive buoyancy towards the water surface of the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emoon pool. The wave-induced motions of the system cause sloshing e¿ects of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe ¿uid within the oil dike.
