Nipple and breast pain are significant problems for breastfeeding\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewomen and a key barrier to establishing long term breastfeeding. This thesis\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexplores nipple and breast pain in breastfeeding women as a phenomenon using\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eboth qualitative and quantitative methods.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eQuantitative data were gathered from a prospective cohort study of 360 primiparous\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebreastfeeding women recruited in Melbourne, Australia to form two of the six\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epapers in this thesis. A qualitative study was conducted with 25 of those women,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eusing phenomenographic analysis of an online discussion forum. Finally a case series\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ereport of a novel treatment for sore nipples completes the comprehensive\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexploration of nipple pain in early motherhood.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfter birth, before leaving hospital, 79% of the women reported nipple pain and over\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe eight weeks of the study 58% reported nipple damage. Almost all the women\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eused topical treatments on their nipples, although there is insufficient evidence to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003erecommend many treatments commonly used. The women described feeling\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eunprepared for the severity of breastfeeding difficulties, vulnerable, isolated and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eburdened by this responsibility.
