Intellectual protection confers the exclusive\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eright upon the patent holder to sell the right of utilization of the invention to interested parties. The\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eselling of licenses provide one important way of receiving revenues for the research done for the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einvention. The prospect of potential revenues provide the incentive for investment into biotechnological\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresearch and subsequent patenting of inventions arising thereof.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe overall aim of this work is to illustrate the close interrelationship of science and law by using\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emarine biotechnology and patents as an example.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSection two provides an overview on the scientific side of marine biotechnology.
