However, the new HR Director\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof AFW has discovered the following problems within this programme:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e1. 25 percent of the expatriates returned home early due to dissatisfaction.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e2. Over 35 percent of the expatriates were considered to be underperforming on the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eassignment.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e3. Around 30 percent expatriates left within a year of their return to England.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn order to achieve its business objectives, it is essential that AFW turns round this failing\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eprogramme into a leading-edge leadership programme. Particularly since AFW is a large\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecompany and plans to expand its business further, it is according to Burgoyne (1988, cited in\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGold et al., 2010) vital that the programme has a high level of maturity, i.e. complexity and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estructure, enabling to meet the organisational needs and objectives. Thus, AFW needs to take\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ea strategic and integrative approach and manage each stage of the ¿International Assignment\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCycle¿ (See Appendix 1), i.e. recruitment and selection, hiring, preparation, expatriation and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003erepatriation, effectively.
