As Wilhelm von Humboldt\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ementioned ¿The variety of languages is not merely a variety of sounds and signs,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebut in fact a variety of world views.¿ Undoubtedly, languages are a unifying\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eelement that brings identity and uniqueness to every human being because they\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etell the rest of the world, where we come from, where we have lived and who we\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eare.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis paper deals with Black English, also called African American English or\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEbonics, as an African American linguistic variety of American English and the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eway it is reflected in the novel Push (1997) by Sapphire. It discusses Black English\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eas a way to express and define black identity and their unique culture. There is a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eparallelism in the oppression of a language and the culture it represents, as we\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecan clearly appreciate in the case of Black English. While Ebonics has been\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eoppressed by the predominant Standard English, blacks were violently silenced by\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e¿standard¿ North Americans. It was not until recently that Ebonics¿ uniqueness\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehas been interpreted neither as a mispronunciation of English, nor as a series of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003egrammatical mistakes due to ignorance or lack of education. Unfortunately, both\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eblacks¿ language and their culture have suffered from manipulation and have\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebeen bent to fit the needs of the dominant class.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSapphari¿s Push (1997) is a novel that combines pure poetry and brutal\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehonesty and was also the first novel completely written in Ebonics. As such, it\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003earose an important controversy due to its novelty and harsh themes. It tells the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estory of a black American adolescent who fights to survive a vicious cycle of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eincest and abuse.
