Shorter product\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elife cycles, the pressure on prices, or the high costs of research and development for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebetter products have made it difficult for today¿s companies to prevail against their\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecompetitors in the contest for profits. But also the challenge to meet the high levels of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecustomers¿ quality and service demand has weakened a company¿s ability to differentiate\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eitself from its competitors. Especially small and medium-sized enterprises have to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eface this problem when competing against bigger companies. Thus, these facts contribute\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto the implication of finding new and alternative ways of gaining a strategic and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecompetitive advantage. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOne measure of doing so is to establish so called strategic partnerships, by leaving the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estage of company-versus-company competition. By this means, the partners use synergy\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eeffects and bundle their strengths to aim for growth and profit enhancement. Such strategic\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epartnerships have become very popular over the last years. This form of collaboration\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eis used in particular by large multinational firms to develop new products and services,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand to enter new markets.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEven though strategic partnerships are strongly increasing in number, approximately 50-\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e60% of them fail in achieving their original goals.  Therefore, it is important to analyze\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhat strategic partnerships are, how they work and whether they are more suitable for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esome areas than for others. The goal of this seminar paper is to discuss to which extent\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estrategic partnerships can help companies to gain a strategic advantage in the supply\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003echain. I will thereby focus on two points: Firstly, which are the areas most applicable\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efor strategic alliances?
