How come?\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn the one hand a broad consensus exists, saying that free trade is better for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eeveryone. From farmers and fishermen to bankers and C.E.O.¿s, everybody from\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhite to blue-collar is supposed to gain welfare from global free trade. And those\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewho don¿t even have collars can get some through trading. Chinäs rise in the last\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edecades is not imaginable without global trade. Almost 1 billion people profit\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efrom that and that is just one country!\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut on the other hand there are protectionist measures, bilateral\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eoverreaching treaties, subsidies for bankrupt industries and non-tariff barriers to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etrade installed from those countries that benefitted the most of the liberalizations\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof the past decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eToday the small ones, the former colonies, the developing countries try to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epick their piece of the pie and are not willing to let the industrialized countries\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebreak the rules they used to engage years ago. They are not willing to take the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einequality anymore and raise their voices in one of the only forums they have,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhere they¿re treated on a one to one basis.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis essay will give an overview about the historic development from the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGeneral Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to the World Trade Organization. Their\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estructures as well as their development will be pointed out. After exploring\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elibraries full of literature to the topics of GATT and WTO, the remarkable text by\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRobert Winham about ¿The evolution of the global trade regime¿ appeared to be\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe most comprehensive, intelligible and workable. Therefore it is one of the main\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esources of this essay.
