This design tries to depict the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eproblem that cooperation is benefi cial for every participant but\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethat there are individual incentives to free-ride, i.e., to invest no\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epersonal effort to increase the common welfare. In public-good\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexperiments cooperation usually breaks down due to imperfect\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003econditional cooperation if measures like sanction possibilities,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ereputation-building or communication are absent.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe contribute to the literature in a number of ways. For example\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewe introduce a new dynamic public-good design to analyze\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhether subjects behave differently when they do not receive\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enew resources in a multiperiod public-good design. We further\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eprovide a monitoring mechanism that mitigates the free-riding\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eproblem, in the fi rst study with a linear and in a second study\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewith a non-linear production function. However, the costly\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eimplementation of the monitoring in itself represents either a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e(second-level) step-level public-good or a second-level linear\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epublic-good in the latter case.
