In the period\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof a fading Ottoman Empire at the end of the 19th century, the physicians considered\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethemselves to be predestined politicians and held a high interest in the well-being of their\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efatherland. Their self-perception as a ¿perplexed Ottoman nation¿ called forth a desire for a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epolitical recommencement. This new beginning should be, henceforth, grounded on a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epositivist and social-darwinist foundation, superseding the traditionally followed theological\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebasis. European scientists served as an inspirational reference and disposed the physicians to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eapply the scientists¿ metaphors and to project them also on terms such as ¿race¿ or ¿nation¿.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe transfer of metaphors brought about the establishment of different meanings of certains\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enotions which previously beared an Ottoman-Islamic symbolism. One of the those political\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexponents was Dr. R¿za Nur who abandoned his long-lasting career at the military medical\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eschool for politics. He was elected as an assemblyman in his hometown of Sinop. He was also\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eaffected by the positivist scientific school.
