Both the worldwide discussion on energy\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esupply and climate change as well as the urgent need for regional diplomatic and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esocial stability builds the fundament for DESERTEC which is a project realizing the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einstallation of solar power plants in the deserts of Middle East and Northern Africa\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand the export of produced energy as element of the European electricity supply.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBy implementing that project Europe would be able to affect three strategic problems\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esimultaneously: The dependency on the fossil resources oil and gas and the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecountries supplying them, problems concerning the handling of climate changes as\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewell as the strengthening of partnerships with states of the Middle East and Northern\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfrica and by that promoting regional stability.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe European Union is in need of diversification of its energy supply portfolio in order\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto be prepared to fulfill international climate protection agreements and reduce the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edependencies from Russian gas and Arabian Oil.
