The specific objectives were:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e1. to better understand and re-examine characteristics of the livestock farms and reasons for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ekeeping livestock,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e2. to assess socio-economic and livelihood benefits of the livestock for the farmers,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e3. to investigate the livestock husbandry including farm management, feeding and breeding\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epractices,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e4. to explore farmers¿ perceptions of favourable traits of buffaloes and cattle and reasons for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe decline of the buffalo population,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e5. to investigate social and environmental impacts as well as problems and needs of the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elivestock farming according to the farmers¿ point of view.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe following hypotheses were tested to achieve the objectives of the study:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e1. Characteristics of livestock farming and reasons for keeping livestock differ between beef\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebuffalo and beef cattle farms and between herd sizes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e2. Differences between beef buffalo and beef cattle farms and between herd sizes have an\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eeffect on socio-economics and livelihoods of the farmers.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e3. There are differences in farm management, feeding management and breeding practices\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebetween beef buffalo and beef cattle farms and between herd sizes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e4. Beef buffalo farms have a lower level of farm inputs and a higher potential for improving\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe production.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e5.
