Thanks\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto globalization, the increasing importance of the media, the changing lifestyles of the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eyounger generations as well as the coalescing Europe, we cannot evade its impact. Not\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eunnaturally, the English language has always been and still is a vital part of the German\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eeducational system with a tendency to expand its influence throughout the next years. Ever\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esince it has been introduced as a foreign language to German schools, new concepts and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emethods to improve foreign language teaching have evolved. Bilingual education is one of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethose concepts. Being used in many countries and educational contexts to enhance second\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elanguage learning, it has also found its way into German school types.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs a method of instruction that involves a higher number of classes held in English per\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eweek and, additionally, other subjects being taught to a greater extent in that foreign language\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethan in traditional educational programs, it was introduced, developed and often criticized.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDue to its success, the demand for this more intense form of second language learning has\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eincreased and more researchers have investigated the outcomes of bilingual education. Is such\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ea program beneficial to children or does it have negative consequences on their overall\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eperformance at school? Would a higher number of English classes per week be sufficient or\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edo other subjects have to be taught in English and, above all, what subjects should that be\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewithout risking the students to have problems understanding their content? And finally, do\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estudents in bilingual programs have a higher language competence than students in\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecomparable traditional English programs? These are all questions that are connected to the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresearch on bilingual programs and what factors contribute to their success or what points to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etheir weaknesses.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe last of the three questions emphasizes the aspect of bilingual education that will be the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efocus of this bachelor's thesis, namely language competence. Due to the fact that an\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eassessment of the actual language competence could not be conducted in the given time\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eperiod, the center of this investigation will be the subjective point of view of teachers and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estudents, thus a self-assessment based on the categories of the Common European Framework\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof Reference for Languages.
